Beginners Contact Improv with Dawne Carleton

Contact Improvisation is a dance that unfolds in the moment as one or more dancers explore a point of contact and their relationship with gravity. Recognisable by its organic lifts, falls and rolls, its palpably sensorial physicality and the dimensionality of its movement range, the study of Contact Improvisation is a pursuit in its own right that also offers a uniquely balanced workout, a complement to other dance forms and a gateway to creativity.

This series of classes will introduce sound practices and basic skills in Contact Improvisation. All are welcome to attend. Each class will begin with a thorough, awareness-based warm-up designed to open the senses, ease out the day, gently bring increased mobility to the joints and tune our relationship with the floor. From there we’ll focus on a specific physical or technical skill; for example, learning to initiate movement from all six limbs (hands, feet, head and tail) or exploring approaches for safely giving and receiving weight. Injury prevention and developing a sense of relaxation and comfort will be the baseline for our work. We will dance.

Please wear comfortable clothing and remove all jewelry prior to class. You may wish to wear kneepads.

Early A.M Run Club/Power Circuits with Aziam Howes

Start your day on the right foot. Running first thing in the morning boosts your immune system and releases stress, while getting your metabolism started in an ideal way. Movement Centre’s running club is designed for runners of all levels.

Coach Aziam will help beginners to safely build their stamina in order to be able to reach their goal of running for 20 minutes consistently. Coach will challenge more advanced runners to take their existing ability to the next level. Unlike conventional running clubs, the first few sessions will be devoted to a specific manner of body strengthening in order to make maximum gains, while minimizing the chance of injury.

The power circuits will focus on explosive power and intensity, producing real results. Be prepared to sweat and burn as you cycle through a series of old school boxing exercises. Recreating the demands of an amateur fight you will move between exercise stations doing sit-ups, dips, neck raises, and more, while combining strategic rest intervals to keep you in your optimal fitness zone for muscle development and fat-burning.

Bring proper footwear, a towel and be ready to run!
