The space that houses MOVEMENTCENTRE has a rich performance art history.

In the early 90’s, dancer JoAnna Powell and painter Ian MacKay lived and worked in the space, hosting a monthly event called HOMEWORKS where dancers, actors, musicians, clowns and other performance artists could show their work. It was not curated and both student and professional artists participated. When Ian moved to Vancouver, JoAnna continued the event, re-naming it RESIDANCE, as well as holding dance workshops and classes in the space. When she moved to Bermuda, JoAnna passed the torch to dancer Lucy Rupert and actor Dennes Pehadzic who called their monthly soirée LANGUAGE & DECADANCE.

Now that the studio is home to MOVEMENTCENTRE, we call this seasonal event SHINE and encourage artists from all performance disciplines to participate. The event continues to be non-curated and open to student, amateur and professional artists. It is a safe place for performers to experiment with new ideas or to present works in progress as well as completed pieces.
